how to lay geotextile fabric
Steps to Lay Geotextile Fabric:
Prepare the ground surface:
Remove any vegetation, debris, or uneven areas.
Compact the soil if it’s too loose .
Orient the fabric roll:
Plan how you will unroll it with the longest dimension following the contour of the slope or work area .
Unroll the fabric:
Lay it out smooth and flat without wrinkles, creases, or pockets of air underneath .
Secure the edges:
Fold or overlap the edges by 6-12 inches and secure with stakes, sandbags, or tapes .
Seam the fabric:
For large areas, seam individual pieces with a minimum 4-6 inch overlap and secure the joint .
Anchor as needed:
Add stakes, gravel, or fill material on the fabric in very high wind areas to prevent blowing .
Backfill over the fabric:
Add the initial fill layers, usually 6 inches at a time, avoiding heavy equipment on the fabric .
Seed or plant:
Cut X-shaped holes and install vegetation through the fabric after backfilling the area .
Monitor and maintain:
Check that the fabric remains taut without wrinkles or undermining and repair as needed .
Proper installation is key:
Ensure the geotextile fabric lays flat and is securely anchored prior to covering with successive soil/fill layers .
