How to determine the optimal shade net percentage for a crop that requires both sun and shade?

by AGU

For crops that require both sun and shade, determining the optimal shade net percentage can be a bit more complex, but there are a few key steps to follow:

1.Understand the Crop’s Light Requirements:

  • Research the specific light needs of the crop, including the ideal daily light integral (DLI), as well as the optimal light levels for different growth stages.
  • Identify the minimum and maximum light requirements for the crop to thrive.

2.Assess the Growing Environment:

  • Evaluate the available sunlight in the growing area, taking into account factors like latitude, season, and microclimate.
  • Determine the baseline light levels without any shade protection.

3.Calculate the Target Shade Percentage:

  • Use the crop’s light requirements and the baseline light levels in the growing area to calculate the target shade percentage needed.
  • The goal is to find the shade percentage that will reduce the light levels to the optimal range for the crop.

For example, if the crop requires a DLI between 12-18 mol/m²/day, and the baseline light levels are 20 mol/m²/day, then a 40-50% shade net would be appropriate to bring the light levels into the ideal range.

4.Consider Seasonal Adjustments:

  • Since light levels can vary significantly throughout the year, the shade net percentage may need to be adjusted seasonally.
  • During periods of high sunlight, a higher shade percentage (60-70%) may be required, while lower percentages (30-40%) may be used during cloudy or winter months.

5.Implement and Monitor:

  • Install the selected shade net and closely monitor the crop’s growth and performance.
  • Make adjustments to the shade percentage as needed, based on the crop’s response and any changes in the growing environment.

By following this systematic approach, you can determine the optimal shade net percentage that provides the right balance of sun and shade for crops with diverse light requirements.
