How to do weed mat
Here are the basic steps to install a weed mat in your garden or landscape:
1.Prepare the soil. Remove any existing weeds and amend the soil as needed. Rake the area smooth.
2.Unroll the weed mat. Lay it out completely over the area, smoothing any wrinkles.
3.Cut to size. Use scissors to trim the edges of the mat to fit your space, cutting into soil 1-2 inches for coverage.
4.Secure edges. Bury the edges of the mat 1-2 inches deep around the perimeter to prevent weeds from growing under. Staple or use landscape spikes if needed.
5.Lay plants/mulch. Plant through holes cut into the mat as desired. Or apply a 2-4 inch layer of mulch, pins staples or rocks to keep the mat from shifting.
6.Water thoroughly. This helps the mat settle and removes air pockets. Continue watering as needed.
7.Weed check. Monitor for new weeds emerging and pull any through the mat. Repair tears or seams if the mat degrades over time.
8.Remove when done. Replace mulch and remove mat after 3-5 years or when garden is replanted. Mat may decompose into soil afterward.
Proper installation takes some care but prevents weeds with less ongoing maintenance. The mat should lay flat and be fully covered once planting/mulching is complete.
