how to install geotextiles
Here are the basic steps to install geotextiles:
1.Prepare the surface. Clear debris and smooth uneven areas. Compact very loose soils.
2.Orientation. Unroll the geotextile running perpendicular to the direction of water flow or construction activity.
3.Seams and overlaps. Fold or roll a minimum 12-18 inches of geotextile back along one edge. Unfold after placing adjacent sheet.
4.Staking. Use wood stakes every 4-6 feet along seams and perimeter edges to hold fabric in place. Hammer stakes at a 45° incline.
5.Backfilling. Place first lift of soil or aggregate in a chuck or lift no greater than 8 inches deep. Compact thoroughly without disturbing fabric.
6.Complete coverage. Unfold overlapping geotextile ensuring 100% coverage of the surface is achieved.
7.Subsequent lifts. Continue backfilling and compacting in successive 8-inch lifts until desired grade is reached.
8.Inspection. Examine for rips, punctures or improper seaming before application of overlying materials.
9.Secure edges. Bury outer edges 12 inches deep or fold and stake down securely.
Proper tensioning and anchoring is important to assure the geotextile performs its purpose without damage or movement over time.
