how to install landscape fabric and edging
Here are the basic steps to install landscape fabric along with edging:
Prepare the soil. Remove any weeds and break up clumps. Rake the area smooth.
Install edging. Place your edging material (concrete, plastic, stones, etc.) around the perimeter of the planting bed, pressing it securely into the soil.
Unroll fabric. Lay out the fabric over the prepared planting bed, leaving an extra 6-8 inches extending past the edging.
Secure the fabric edges. Fold the excess fabric under the edging and press it firmly into the soil on both sides to anchor it in place.
Cut slits for plants. Use shears to cut X-shaped slits in the fabric where you will plant, making them larger than the root balls.
Plant through slits. Place plants in holes, extending their roots through the slits. Backfill soil and firm gently.
Apply mulch. Spread 2-3 inches of mulch evenly over the entire fabric surface and 6 inches beyond the edging.
Water well. Thoroughly water the newly planted bed to settle soil around the roots.
Proper installation of both edging and landscape fabric together creates a defined border that contains mulch and makes maintenance easier. Be sure to inspect periodically for any gaps or tears that need repair.
