what to put on top of weed barrier?

by AGU

After laying a weed barrier, there are several options for what to put on top to enhance its effectiveness and improve the appearance of your garden. Here are some common choices:

1.Organic Mulch: Applying a layer of organic mulch, such as wood chips, straw, or shredded bark, on top of the weed barrier is a popular option. Mulch helps to further suppress weed growth by blocking sunlight, conserves moisture in the soil, regulates soil temperature, and provides a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing look to the garden.

2.Gravel or Stones: If you prefer a more decorative or hardscape look, you can place gravel or decorative stones on top of the weed barrier. This option is particularly suitable for pathways or areas where you don’t plan to grow plants directly. However, keep in mind that weeds may still find a way to grow in the crevices between the gravel or stones over time.

3.Compost or Organic Matter: Another option is to spread a thin layer of compost or organic matter on top of the weed barrier. This can help improve soil fertility and provide nutrients to the plants. However, be cautious not to use too thick a layer, as it may encourage weed growth or hinder water penetration.

4.Plantings or Ground Covers: If you have larger gaps or openings in the weed barrier, you can consider planting ground cover plants or low-growing perennials to fill those spaces. These plants can help cover the weed barrier, add visual interest, and further suppress weed growth. Choose plants that are compatible with your garden’s conditions and can thrive in the available sunlight and soil type.

It’s important to note that whatever material you choose to place on top of the weed barrier, it should be relatively lightweight and allow water, air, and nutrients to pass through to the soil beneath. Additionally, be mindful of the specific needs of your plants, such as watering and fertilization, to ensure their health and growth.

Regular maintenance, such as monitoring for weed breakthroughs, removing debris, and replenishing mulch as needed, will help maintain the effectiveness and appearance of the weed barrier and the layer on top.
